As advertised it was all supervised by the films original cinematographer. It is very unfortunate that the films director could not have lived to see this, but I think he would have been impressed.

If you love this movie, or love good movies in general, then you owe it to yourself to get this new Blu-Ray. Even if you already have the original Blu-Ray or this film or even if you don't have a Blu-Ray player of your own, please by this new video and add a truly great classic to your film collection.

This is a spy movie for adults, even more mature than a Bourne movie. Robert De Niro gives a wonderful, understated performance.

His character is tough as nails, but also obviously vulnerable in the way only a seasoned actor can be.

As you watch this, contrast it with a James Bond film. Bond inevitably smirks through every scene, De Niro in Ronin, on the other hand, looks like he's constantly nervous about his surroundings.

Sure, it's not as "cool," but it sure brings you into the world of the film. I remember seeing this when it first came out in theaters and enjoying it but not being as impressed as I was with this most recent viewing.

Sometimes a film grows on you over time, and that's certainly the case here. There are a couple moments that I don't like, but they are very minor.

I can recall two instances where the director set up a scene by flashing to some object before the object became relevant, and in both cases the forward flashes struck me as a bit clumsy.

The "wrong way" sign is the more egregious of the two accompanied as it is by a surge in the music that doesn't quite work. The "wrong way on the highway" chase scene is very good Special Edition.

But Ronin is overall a better movie than that one. The acting is top notch throughout. Sean Bean is perfect, and Stellan Skarsgard is a revelation.

I believe this was the first time I saw him on film and he brings a tremendous presence to the screen. There will be a few scenes that stick with you after watching this.

The "reflex" scene, the "ambush with a cup of coffee" scene, the "home surger" scene, and "post surgery discussion" scene where the film gets its title.

That last is actually a very polite interrogation as Michael Lonsdale tries to figure out if he's about to be murdered by the man whose life he has just saved.

The subtext is everything in this film. Even if you don't grab it the first time, chances are the scenes will linger with you. Maybe I thought it was a little too sure of itself on the first viewing, but with reflection I've come to realize that yes, it is that good.

Ronin never looked good in theaters. The theatrical release prints were fuzzy. And as soon as the camera began to move, the image lost focus and made many people nauseous.

When the film landed on DVD, and later Blu-ray, the problem had not been corrected. However, that issue has recently been corrected by Arrow Video.

They went back to the negative and remastered a new version of the movie never seen before. A massive improvement over all previously screened versions.

And the sound is excellent! Between that and the extras included, I cannot recommend this product highly enough. I cannot think of a film that is better made.

Jean Reno and Robert DeNiro are great but so are all the other actors. An example of how well done this film is - when they needed someone to play the Russian Ice Skating Champion - they got Katerina Witt.

It's a small part in the film but carried out as well as it possibly could be. You could NOT have had this part better played.

All the acting in this film is that way. Sean Bean plays the one character that is hired to pull off this job - who actually, as a character The movie plays up the supernatural but the story of the honor.

The lead role goes to Keanu Reeves, as "Kai", who was from the original story. The true hero of the story is the Samurai, Oishi.

However, this is Hollywood's spin. Nicely done! I did not know the story of the 47 Ronin and looked it up to read more about after finishing the movie.

While the movie had a fantasy element, the core of the story was based on true events and is a truly remarkable story of courage and loyalty.

The story was very well told, from beginning to end, although I will admit I wish it would have ended a little differently.

If it had, though, it would have detracted from the beautiful story of loyalty, courage, and grace. There is an element of fantasy to the story that was beautifully handled and helped move the plot along without being unrealistic and it added to the over all plot line.

The fighting sequences were beautifully choreographed and we're almost dance like in nature. It was apparent that the actors had trained extensively for their roles and all of their hard work paid off.

It is a beautiful example of the richness and beauty found in other cultures and other times. When the movie ended I was left with a yearning to learn more about the 47 Ronin, and I'm so happy I took the time and effort to do the research.

It is a remarkable story, and a beautifully made movie. This is a great movie, full of action, mysticism and light romance.

My brother is very picky when it come to movies. If you like movies about ancient Asian cultures, you will like this movie about loyalty, duty and honor.

This acting is great, featuring many well know Japaneses actors. This movie does take place in Japan and the scenery is beautiful.

I highly recommend it, especially if you are a Keanu Reeves fan. I saw this in the theater and about 15 times at home.

Each comes on separate blu ray disk. Long load time and promo intros that can't be skipped over. Navigation controls seem sluggish and slow to respond for some reason, but movies play great.

All three films better than expected. Not a Keanu fan since F. Coppella's Dracula, but 47 Ronin is excellent. Beautiful 3D on all. The 3D adds so much, can't believe it isn't more popular with consumers.

A masterful portrayal of a character that is weak and in over his head. There are a number of extremely well done movies - this is one of them.

The 4k remaster albeit at p on blu ray is clean, with film grain retained. The night time scenes have been properly regraded with contrast ramped up a little to really show off the dark streets and stark headlights in the Paris based scenes.

Daytime locations like Nice and Arle look really fresh and close shots on actors are pristine. The soundtrack also showcases great depth amongst the talkie and action scenes alike.

Loved it. The disc opens with the haunting Ronin theme played over a montage of clips and the whole package has been presented with an evident love for the film itself and the craft of the professionals who shot it, acted in it and directed it.

The booklet is a superb keepsake rounding off a brilliantly produced edition of a 90's classic.

Arrow's new 4K master done for this release is just awesome. Rich in detail, nice natural grain pattern, almost perfect sharpness, strong colors and good black levels The sound comes in 5.

Extras are plenty and interesting. There is a site called caps-a-holic. Perhaps best remembered for the astonishing car chases the last of the three featuring approx stunt drivers its easy to over look the brilliant small touches in a tight, stylish thriller.

Director Frankenheimer made some classic movies, but also some Turkeys. Ronin amongst his last few is probably the filmakers best.

Equally star Deniro has made good and bad over his long career, where Ronin sits in his history is as with all things film related subjective, but out of his action thriller movies certainly this film has to be right up there amongst the best of them, and unlike the mesmerising Heat which in terms of ice cool dialougue and underworld character study Ronin has some common ground with he's the good guy, hero of the piece.

Utilising an all star cast, with memorable support actors and a script from David Mamet he treated it under a pseudonym on fine form with a quotable number of dialogue scenes, theres really not much of weak link.

Perhaps the story is overly simple, as a bunch of mixed mercenaries are hired to grab a mysterious case, double crossed and on the hunt for it.

There is of course more to it, but that's the bare bones. The point of the film is not really having an over twisty plot, but the tension, the build up and of course the gritty action.

The film is old school, stripped back film making, utilizing the french locations to great effect, great sound and set designs. In an era of over CGI'd action, endless runtimes and numerous sequels, from a retrospective viewing experience Ronin is a masterclass in thriller filmmaking.

Oh and its got a couple of car chases, which are alright. Ronin is a fantastic movie with lots of action and a great plot.
