Hopefully, some day, the series will be available in a dubbed English version. But the reason I didn't deduct even half a star is because the cast is excellent, the plots are intriguing, the filmwork is great, and Venice is a magnificent and unique setting for a crime series.
In many police series, there is conflict within the detectives family. The Brunetti family actually gets along pretty well, and the fact that they are a likable family that gets along adds to the believability--hard to fight crime if your biggest fights are at home.
A friend was very impressed by the Venetian lifestyle and wonered if they really live as well as portrayed in the film.
Seeing the Police boat rather than squad car enroute to the crime scene and the ambulance boat picking up the body is one of many visual differences from umpteen other crime shows.
The series is unique but fans of Inspector Morse i am one will probably notice some similarities and enjoy it. I purchased several episodes on DVD before purchasing my first episode on Kindle, and the savings is significant.
Thoroughly enjoying this series - delightful scenery, the high quality photography of the beautiful city a visual 'treat' for me. Interesting to read a wide variety of reviews on this work.
I found the 2nd actor, Kockich, to be more believable as an Italian socially aware detective. I also enjoyed the interplay shown with the family relationships.
The characters well played - and very likable. The plots were interesting - and not too dark - I also appreciate the variety of social issues that were woven into the episodes.
All in all, I found this to be top quality and I'll be sad to see it end. Beautiful setting, interesting characters - a bit too much of family drama or comic relief - but the presentation of corruption and the nexus of state bureaucracy and crime - even at the high oligarch family level - is fascinating.
There are some one-liners that stick with you because they mirror our own world. In one episode, a crook, passing off expired medications and useless placebos to a UN organization for his companies tax write-off, claims that the UN agency never checked on the 'donations' because their functionaries only wanted their photos taken passing out the worthless aid to poor villagers in Africa or wherever.
The cycle of cynicism rings very true. Even if there might be some German caricaturing of Italian society - its still very intelligent.
Low on bloody violence, sex and vulgar language but occasionally high on sociological insights. Most adaptations from books to screen are not that well done.
But this is the exception. The screen writing was spot on as was the casting, even with the change of actors part way through the series.
Although it is not necessary to have read the books first, it truly enhances the pleasure. It was like re-reading the books. Great for those who want to brush up their German while seeing Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti mysteries brought to life.
Krol plays the Commissario in the first four films, followed by Uwe Kockisch as Leon's genial genius police officer. As in the books, Brunetti's family life often provides the most enjoyable parts of the story.
Brunetti, like Leon, brings an unfailingly positive world view to the grimy realities of life and death in Venice.
I've been reading the Leon novel series and heard about this German made-for-TV series. It all takes place in Venice, but with German actors.
It followed the story-line very closely and the actors were very much the way I imagined them. If this had been made by a US film company, I can imagine how badly they could botch it up, so I'm glad this series exists as it is.
I will continue to watch the rest of the series. Subtitles were a little hard to read at time, which is why I took off one star. Absolutely the best series ever.
Love the crazy German speaking Italians but the north of Italy was German speaking for a century or so when run by the Hapsburgs so maybe not too far out.
Love the plots, which get better and better. Seem to address minutely the issues facing Euros today. It's not your dad's post WWII Europe and the contemporary issues are well laid out with the great acting and lots of droll humor which makes serious things palatable.
Interesting: German with English subtitles, butit takes place in Venice. We love the scenery, and often seeing a full movie-length show without a single car or truck or bus in it but gobs of boats and gondolas!
The first four shows are a bit lame: the actors playing the original Brunetti and his wife just don't fit the roles or click with any chemistry.

Then a valuable signet ring is found close by, providing the first vital clue. It leads Commissario Guido Brunetti right to the heart of aristocratic Venice, to a family still grieving for its abducted son Important information is leaking from inside the Venetian Questura, and Commissario Guido Brunetti is tasked with uncovering the culprit.
Following various contradictory leads, Brunetti navigates his way through Venice's underworld in an attempt to understand who is responsible for the vicious attack.
When a wealthy Venetian woman is found brutally murdered, the prime suspect is her Romanian maid, who has fled the city. As she attempts to leave the country, carrying a considerable sum of money and forged papers, the maid runs into the path of an oncoming train and is killed.
Case closed. But when the old woman's neighbour returns from abroad, it becomes clear that the maid could not have been the killer. Commissario Brunetti decides - unofficially - to take the case on himself.
As Brunetti investigates, it becomes clear that the motive for the murder was unlikely to have been greed, rather that it had its roots in the temptations of lust.
But perhaps Brunetti is thinking of the wrong deadly sin altogether Celebrated by The Times as one of the 50 Greatest Crime Writers, Donna Leon brings Venice to life in the twenty-second Brunetti novel of this bestselling series, where our detective must uncover the mystery surrounding a mute man's murder.
When making routine enquiries into a possible bribery case that could embarrass the mayor — a humiliation Vice-Questore Patta is very keen to avoid — Commissario Brunetti receives a call from his wife, Paola, who is evidently very upset.
That a soul could have lived such a joyless life is too much for Paola to bear, and she asks Guido if he can find out what happened.
It is a surprise to Brunetti just how little was known about this man-child — there are no official records to show he even existed. With the help of Inspector Vianello and the ever-resourceful Signorina Elettra, perhaps Brunetti can get to the truth and find some measure of solace.
Neither Commissario Brunetti nor his wife Paola have ever had much sympathy for the Italian armed forces, so when a young cadet is found hanged, at Venice's elite military academy, Brunetti's emotions are complex: pity and sorrow at the death of a boy close in age to his own son, and contempt and irritation for the arrogance and high-handedness of the boy's teachers and fellow students.
The young man is the son of an ex-politician, a man of an impeccable integrity all too rare in Italian politics.
But as Brunetti - and the indispensable Signorina Elettra - investigate further, no one seems willing to talk, as the military protects its own and civilians keep their own counsel.
Is this the natural reluctance of Italians to involve themselves with the authorities, or is Brunetti facing a conspiracy of silence? When Commissario Brunetti receives a visit from one of his wife's students with a strange and vague interest in investigating the possibility of a pardon for a crime committed by her grandfather many years ago, he thinks little of it, despite being intrigued by the girl's intelligence and moral conscience.
But when the girl is found stabbed to death, Claudia Leonardo is no longer Paola's student, but instead becomes Brunetti's case. Claudia seemed to have no discernible living family, but lived with an elderly Austrian woman.
Brunetti is stunned by the extraordinary art collection the old woman keeps, and when she in turn is found dead, the case begins to unlock long buried secrets of collaboration during the war, secrets few in Italy are happy to explore A young woman returns from holiday to find her elderly neighbour dead on the floor.
A heart attack seems the likely cause, but Commissario Brunetti is not so sure and decides to take a closer look. Soon he discovers that she was part of an organization that cares for abused women and that her apartment was a safe-house.
Convinced that this is the lead he has been looking for, Brunetti begins his search for answers. But as he sets out to discover the truth behind her death, he is drawn into a decades-old story of lies and deceit that has blighted love and ruined lives - and has claimed this innocent woman as its newest victim.
Brunetti's investigation takes him deep into the dark heart of his beloved Venice. In The Waters of Eternal Youth , the twenty-fifth instalment in the bestselling Brunetti series, our Commissario finds himself drawn into a case that may not be a crime at all.
She was rescued from the canal at the last moment, but in many ways it was too late; she suffered severe brain damage and her life was never the same again.
Once a passionate horse rider, Manuela, now aged thirty, cannot remember the accident, or her beloved horse, and lives trapped in an eternal youth.
The Contessa, unconvinced that this was an accident, implores Brunetti to find the culprit she believes was responsible for ruining Manuela's life.
Out of a mixture of curiosity, pity and a willingness to fulfil the wishes of a loving grandmother, Brunetti reopens the case. But once he starts to investigate, Brunetti finds a murky past and a dark story at its heart.
The Waters of Eternal Youth is awash in the rhythms and concerns of contemporary Venetian life, from historical preservation, to housing, to new waves of African migrants, all circling the haunting story of a woman trapped in a perpetual childhood.
